Early Life

Obama was born at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii on 4 August 1961. He remains the only president born outside the contiguous 48 states. He was born to a Kenyan father and an American mother.

Career

Obama served on the boards of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago from 1994 to 2002. From 1995 to 2002, he served on the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, and from 1995 to 1999, he served as the founding president and chairman of the board of directors.

In 2007, Obama’s law license became inactive. In 1996, he was elected to the Illinois Senate, succeeding Alice Palmer, the Democratic State Senator from Illinois’s 13th District. Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation that reformed ethics and health care laws once elected.

As co-chairman of the bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules in 2001, Obama supported Republican Governor Ryan’s Payday loan regulations and predatory mortgage lending regulations aimed at averting home foreclosures.

He lost a Democratic primary race for Illinois’s 1st congressional district in the United State House of Representatives to four-term incumbent Bobby Rush by a margin of two to one in 2000.

Obama became chairman of the Illinois Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee when Democrats, after a decade in the minority, regained a majority in 2003. In November 2004, Obama resigned from the Illinois Senate, following his election to the U.S. Senate.

Obama commissioned a poll to assess his prospects in a 2004 U.S. Senate race in May 2002 and in January 2003, he formally announced his candidacy. Obama was an early opponent of the George W. Bush administration’s 2003 invasion of Iraq.

In June 2004, Obama’s expected opponent in the general election, Republican primary winner Jack Ryan, withdrew from the race. Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, seen by nine million viewers in July of that same year.

In January 2005, Obama was sworn in as a senator, becoming the only Senate member of the Congressional Black Caucus.  President Bush signed into law the Democratic Republic of the Congo  Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act, marking the first federal legislation to be enacted with Obama as its primary sponsor in December 2006.

Obama sponsored an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act to add safeguards for personality-disorder military discharges later in 2007. This amendment passed the full Senate in the spring of 2008. In November 2008, Obama resigned his senate seat on to focus on his transition period for the presidency.

Obama’s campaign set numerous fundraising records during both the primary process and the general election. Obama became the first major-party presidential candidate to reject finances from the public in June 2008, in the general election since the system was founded in 1976.
