He attended Kasmpaşa Piyale primary school. Recep graduated in 1973 from the religious high school of Hatip after he participated in the National Turkish Student Union and won the Community of Turkish Technical Painters’ poetry-reading competition that the Turkish Technical Painters Community funded.

Due to Mekteb-i Mülkiye’s refusal to admit graduates of Mam Hatip University, Erdoan later attended Eyüp High School.

Career

A top businessman and consultant in the commercial sector, Erdogan worked as the head of the National Salvation Party’s (MSP) Beyolu and Istanbul youth branches from 1976 to 1980 after which he was forced to resign due to the military coup in 1980.

He joined the Central Executive Board of the newly established Welfare Party in 1985 after being chosen as its Beyolu District Head in 1984.

The following year, he was voted as the Welfare Party’s Istanbul Provincial Head.

He was elected Mayor of Metropolitan Istanbul in March 1994.

He was imprisoned for reading a Ziya Gökalp poem that was deemed “an incitement to violence and religious or ethnic hatred” during a gathering in December 1997.

In July 1999, Erdogan was freed from prison after serving for four months.

Recep helped establish the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in 2001 with few of his friends, and he was chosen to serve as the party’s founding general chairman.

In 2003, he was elected Turkish Prime Minister. He won the first-ever popular vote presidential election in Turkey in 2014, and he was chosen as the AK Party’s chairman in 2017. In 2018, 52.59% of the vote went to Erdogan, who won the reelection as president.
