When T. D. Jakes was twenty-five years in 1982 he was a pastor at Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith a shopfront church in Smithers, West Virginia that had only ten members. As of 1982, T. D. Jakes fellowshipped with Christian Denomination Higher Always Abounding Assemblies and it was founded by Bishop Sherman Watkins. T. D. Jakes later relocated in 1988 to South Charleston, in West Virginia, his congregation later expanded to 300 worshippers.

Later again, in 1993, he relocated to Cross Lanes, West Virginia, where his congregation expanded greatly to over 1000 worshippers. A greater number of worshippers in T. D. Jake’s congregation were African American and the Caucasians had a fewer number of worshippers.
