Michael Chow was born Zhou Yinghua in Shanghai, China on 7 March 1939. His father Zhou Xinfang was a legendary Peking Opera actor and his mother came from a wealthy family whose fortune had been made in tea.

When he was 12, he was sent to a British boarding school and spent his adolescence in Europe. In 1952, he went to London. He proceeded to attend Saint Martin’s School of Art and then was enrolled in the Hammersmith School of Building and Architecture.

Career

Chow created his most successful business, Mr. Chow. Serving Pekinese Chinese cuisine, the upscale restaurant opened in the Knightsbridge district of London in early 1968. Chow said that his restaurants have always been underlined by “this need and desire to promote the Chinese culture”, which he has done through food.

He visits China at least two times a year and has said he’s thrilled by the country’s economic growth and greater presence on the world stage. “China has always been a great, great nation. In 1974, Mr. Chow launched its first location outside of London in Beverly Hills, California.

Jack Nicholson, Billy Wilder, and Anjelica Huston were those people who frequently visited the restaurant. He opened another location in Manhattan, New York City in 1978. He proceeded to open restaurants in Miami Beach, Florida; Malibu, California; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Chow was chosen as one of the 12-member board of governors for Eli and Edythe Broad’s three-story $140 million Contemporary Art Museum, The Broad, in downtown Los Angeles.

In 1968, Michael Chow got married to his first wife, Grace Coddington who is a Welsh model and Vogue magazine, creative director. The following year, the couple got divorced. Chow married Tina Lutz, who is a designer, and model in 1972.  They had a daughter named China and a son named Maximilian.

In 1989, they divorced. In 1992, Chow married his third wife, Eva Chun. The couple had a child by name Asia together and they later divorced in 2017. Michael married Vanessa Rano two years after that in which they have two children named Phoenix and Skye.
