Jimmy Haslam was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 9th, 1954. He was born to Jim and Cynthia Haslam. In 1958, his father founded the Pilot Oil Corporation which would later merge with bankrupt Flying J to become Pilot Flying J in 2020.

Bill is his younger brother who from 2011 to 2019 served as governor of Tennessee. He was enrolled in the University of Tennessee and he had a roommate named Bob Corker who would go on to become a United States Senator.


In 1976, Jimmy began his career at Pilot Corporation as vice president of operations, development, and sales. The truck stop chain would become one of the largest companies in the United States with headquarters in Knoxville.

In 1981, Pilot first opened its travel center, and in 1996, when Haslam was named the chief executive officer and president, the company had grown to operate 50 convenience stores and 96 travel centers.

In 2001, Pilot Corporation attained yet another milestone when it joined with Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC to form Pilot Travel Centers LLC. It was announced that CVC Capital Partners acquired 49.8% interest in Pilot Travel Centers LLC with Pilot retaining 50% ownership of the company in 2008.

The Haslam family acquired all of CVC Capital Partners’ shares in the company in 2015. Pilot’s convenience store operations continue to be fully owned and managed by Pilot Corporation. Pilot Flying J acquired Western Petroleum and the majority owner of Maxum Petroleum and 2012 formed Maxum Enterprises LLC, d/b/a Pilot Logistics Services in 2012.

Pilot Flying J is one of the widest top 10 privately held companies in the US and employs more than 24,000 employees. The Pilot Flying J network provides customers with the opportunity to have more than 70,000 parking spaces for trucks, 4,800 showers, and 4,300 diesel lanes featuring DEF at the pump.

He got married to Susan “Dee” Bagwell Haslam, CEO of RIVR Media. The couple has three grown-up children together, James Bagwell Haslam (adopted in 2016), Whitney Haslam Johnson, and Cynthia Haslam Arnholt and they also have five grandchildren.
