What is Maurice Starr’s Net Worth?

Maurice Starr is an English singer, songwriter, and music producer who has a net worth of $80 million. For the popular boy bands New Edition and New Kids on the Block, Maurice Starr is famous for writing, producing, and arranging their albums and songs. New Kids ultimately sold more than 80 million albums around the globe.

Early Life

Larry Curtis Johnson was recognized as Maurice Starr and was born on July 14, 1953, in DeLand, Florida to musicians Willie Mae and Ray. His mother played the instrument at church while his father was a trumpet player. Johnson moved to Boston, Massachusetts when he was a youth.

Career

Together with his brothers Soni and Michael, Johnson began his musical career by performing in the bands The Johnson Brothers and the Jonzun Crew. In the latter electro group, which incorporated elements of Parliament-Afro-futurist Funkadelic, Steve Thorpe and Gordy Worthy also participated.

The Jonzun Crew’s debut album, “Lost in Space,” released in 1983, featured several original songs, including “Space is the Place,” “Space Cowboy,” and “Pack Jam (Look Out for the OVC). In the years that followed, the group issued two additional records, “Down to Earth” in 1984 and “Cosmic Love” in 1990.

At the Strand Theatre in Boston, Starr served as the host of the Hollywood Talent Night talent competition. There was a 1982 performance by the boy band New Edition. Despite finishing in second place, Starr was so delighted with the three that he invited them to his studio the next day to make an album.

Once Starr departed New Edition, he became the owner of the boy band New Kids on the Block. In contrast to New Edition, which was made up of young black males, this group was made up of white men. Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Jonathan, Jordan, Joey McIntyre, and Joey McIntyre made up its roster.

Later, the same-titled debut album from 1986 by New Kids on the Block was made available. On Step by Step, the final album by the New Kids on the Block, Starr, who also functioned as producer, penned each song. The album’s lead single, “Tonight,” as well as the album’s title song, both reached the top of the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200.

Following his enormous success with New Kids on the Block, Starr attempted to replicate it with the teen R&B group Perfect Gentlemen. The group eventually issued the album “Rated PG” and supported New Kids on the Block during their US tour as their opening act. Throughout the 1990s, he contributed to additional albums in addition to Tiffany’s “New Inside” and Ana’s “Body Language.”

He has contributed to a small number of album tunes. NK5, Tommy Page, Rick Wes, Homework, and Classic Example were among the artists whose albums Starr contributed to in support. But none of these musicians could have achieved the level of fame enjoyed by New Edition or New Kids on the Block.
