Early Life
Robin Li Yanhong was birthed and groomed in Yangquan, Shanxi Province, where he spent most of his life while growing up. His parents were both factory laborers. Li, the only boy out of five kids, was the fourth child.
For his education, Robin majored in information management with a bachelor of management from the University of Peking. He later bagged another doctorate degree in computer science from a US-based University at Buffalo later in 1991.
After making the decision not to obtain a Ph.D. Robin graduated with a master’s degree in 1994.
Career
RankDex
Li joined Dow Jones and Company’s IDD Information Services in 1994 and worked there on the creation of a software system for The Wall Street Journal’s online publication. He also sought to make search engine algorithms better.
Between May 1994 and June 1997, he stayed at IDD Information Services. While working at IDD in 1996, Li developed the Rankdex site-scoring system, which was given a U.S. patent and is used to determine search engine page rankings.
Prior to Google filing a patent for a very similar algorithm two years later in 1998, it was the first search engine to use hyperlinks to gauge the quality of the websites it was indexing.
In some of his U.S. patents for PageRank, Google founder Larry Page cited Li’s work. Later, Robin developed Rankdex technology for the Baidu search engine.
Route to Baidu
From July 1997 through December 1999, Li was a staff engineer for Infoseek, one of the first internet search engine companies.
The Go.com picture search feature was one of his accomplishments. Since launching Baidu in January 2000, Li has grown the business into the biggest search engine in China and the second-largest independent[vague] search engine globally.
Baidu successfully completed its IPO on NASDAQ on August 5th, 2005, and in 2007 it became the first Chinese firm to be a part of the NASDAQ-100 Index. In 2007, he was listed as one of the “50 individuals who matter now” by CNN Money.
Recognition
Robin received the honor of being one of the “China Top Ten Innovative Pioneers” in 2001. He was included in the “IT Ten Famous People” list in 2002 and 2003.
He was included in the second class of “Chinese Software Ten Outstanding Young People” in April 2004. He received the “ASEAN Youth Award” in its twelfth session in August 2005.
One of the “CCTV 2005 Chinese Economic Figures of The Year,” he received this honor in December 2005. Robin was recognized by American Business Weekly in December 2006 as the “World’s Best Business Leader” for the year.

Robin Li tied the knot with Dongmin Ma, who also works for Baidu. They currently reside in Beijing, China, and are blessed with Four kids.
