Early Life

On September 8, 1982,  Austin Chumlee Russell was born in Henderson, Nevada. He grew up in Newport Beach, California.

At the age of two, he memorized the periodic table of elements. Russell applied for his first patent for a groundwater recycling system to reuse water from sprinklers at the age of 13.

Russell’s parents introduced him to laser entrepreneur Jason Eichenholz when he was 15, who became Russell’s mentor and later joined Luminar as co-founder and chief technology officer.

He has two siblings, his brother Sage and Terra, his sister. In 2013, he graduated from St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. Also at the University of California, Irvine, he also studied the Beckman Laser Institute while in high school.

The son of Rick Harrison and grandson of Richard Harrison was his childhood best friend and he was named Corey Harrison.


Austin was 21 years when he began working at Gold and Silver. While he was still in high school, in 2012, Austin founded Luminar. In 2013, Russell won $100,000 from the Thiel Fellowship.

The company’s first five years were spent in stealth mode. Russell engineered and manufactured Luminar’s lidar components himself, rather than purchasing components.

Chumlee started his own company selling novelty items that he designed. He became a breakout cast member as well as a fan favorite on “Pawn Stars.”

Rick Harrison bought the Austin company stake so that the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop could sell his novelty items more accurately.

In 2017, Austin launched Chumlee candy on the boulevard. In Las Vegas, it is found across the street from the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop.

The day-to-day operation of the candy store was done by his brother Sage Russell. Luminar went public, On December 3, 2020,  trading on the Nasdaq as LAZR.

On December 3, Russell’s 104.7 million shares, roughly one-third of Luminar’s equity, were worth $2.4 billion at the close of trading.

This made Russell the world’s youngest self-made billionaire. He also became chairman of the company at this time.

Russell donated $4 million to Team seas on January 1, 2022, allowing the fundraiser to reach its goal of $30 million raised.

Personal Life

Olivia Russell was friends with Austin for a while before there started dating. In May 2018, they got engaged. They got married in August 2019.

Presently, no one knows Olivia’s whereabouts. Fans noticed that all pictures of her had been scrubbed from Chumlee’s Instagram account in July 2020.
