What is Robert Mugabe’s Net Worth?
Robert Mugabe was a Zimbabwean revolutionary and politician who had a net worth of $20 million at the time of his death in 2019. Robert Mugabe presided over Zimbabwe as its prime minister from 1980 to 1987 and then as its president from 1987 to 2017.
Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924, at the Kutama Mission village in Southern Rhodesia’s Zvimba District. He was raised alongside his five brothers and sisters and hailed from the Zezuru clan, a division of the Shona tribe.
His family was ejected from the mission settlement by Father Jean-Baptiste Loubiere, a French priest after his father got into a dispute with a Jesuit in the early 1930s.
Mugabe completed his education after the family moved back to the mission. In 1941, Kutama College extended him an offer of a spot in a teacher training program. Following the completion of his teaching degree, he started working as a teacher in Southern Rhodesia’s schools.
Later on, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. There, he was exposed to Marxist ideologies and Mahatma Gandhi’s deeds during the Indian Independence Movement. Before moving back to Southern Rhodesia in 1952, he completed his bachelor’s degree in history and English literature.
The apprehension of African nationalist leader Leopold Takawira prompted Mugabe to join a protest, which is how he first got active in politics in the early 1960s. Mugabe was asked to address the audience because he had worked hard to position himself as an enlightened nationalist sympathizer in the years before. He resolved to focus exclusively on activism after his speech.
The National Democratic Party elected him as their publicity secretary.
He was toppled in a coup by members of his own party in 2017, and Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former vice president, took his place.
Robert Mugabe got married to his first wife Sally Hayfron. In September 1963, she gave birth to a boy, but he passed away from cerebral malaria just three years later, in 1966.
Robert Mugabe later got married to his second wife Grace.
Soon after his resignation in 2017, Mugabe was ill. He routinely visited Singapore for medical care, and in 2019 he underwent hospitalization there. In September of that same year, he passed away at a hospital in Singapore at the age of 95.
