What is the King of Thailand’s Net Worth?

The King of Thailand also known as Bhumibol Adulyadej and Rama IX, was the monarch of Thailand from 1946 to 2016. At the time of his death, he had a net worth of $30 billion.

Childhood

Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on December 5, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his father was a student in the public health department at Harvard University.

Baby Songkla is the name that appears on his birth certificate, but after his parents, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla and his mom Sangwan, later known as Princess Srinagarindra, spoke with Adulyadej’s uncle, King Rama VII. The family then decided to call him Bhumibol Adulyadej, which in Thai means “Strength of the Land or Incomparable Power.”

The father of Bhumibol, Princess Galyani Vadhana, and Prince Ananda Mahidol died in 1929 from kidney disease. Bhumibol was raised in Thailand with his siblings, Prince Ananda Mahidol and Princess Galyani Vadhana.

Adulyadej attended the Mater Dei school in Bangkok for a short time until his mother relocated the family to Switzerland in 1933, where he attended the École nouveau de la Suisse Romande. Ananda Mahidol, at nine years old succeeded King Rama VII after the latter abdicated.

The family continued to reside in Switzerland and delegated control of Ananda’s royal responsibilities to a regency council. Bhumibol had a love for jazz music and photography while still a young man, and he started playing the saxophone in the early 1940s.

He graduated with a baccalauréat des Lettres from the Gymnase Classique Cantonal de Lausanne, where he majored in French literature, Greek, and Latin. He subsequently pursued his physics studies at the University of Lausanne until his family returned to Thailand following World War II.

Career

King Ananda Mahidol was succeeded by Adulyadej after he died on June 9, 1946, from a gunshot wound (under unusual circumstances). However, before ascending to the throne, he continued his education in Switzerland, changing his focus from science to law and political science.

Rangsit, the Prince of Chainat, was Bhumibol’s uncle and served as his representative. The coronation of Adulyadej was postponed as a result of his injuries sustained in a car accident in October 1948, which included spinal injury, facial paralysis, and the loss of vision in his right eye.

On May 5, 1950, he was crowned, and during his coronation speech, he pledged to “rule with righteousness for the welfare and happiness of the Siamese people.” After finishing his education in Switzerland, Bhumibol relocated to Thailand once more in 1951.

In the early years of his rule, Plaek Phibunsongkhram’s military dictatorship limited his influence. Phibunsongkhram gained additional power after being deposed from power in 1957 by Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat and the Royal Thai Army.

Sarit Thanarat was designated “Military Defender of the Capital” by Adulyadej after declaring martial law. General Thanom Kittikachorn oversaw Thailand’s military government after Thanarat passed away in 1963, but he was overthrown by the 1973 revolt of the Thai people.

Bhumibol declared Kittikachorn’s resignation, at which at that point caused the general to leave Thailand as riots broke out and police killed numerous students. Students and legal organizations were furious and started protesting when Adulyadej invited Kittikachorn back into Thailand. This led to the Thammasat University massacre on October 6, 1976.

Right-wing paramilitaries and police then invaded the university grounds after opening fire on the campus. Border Patrol Police commandos then arrived. Although 167 people were injured and 46 people died in total, unverified estimates said that at least 100 protesters perished that day.

After getting involved in a fight between Chamlong Srimuang and General Suchinda Kraprayoon (the head of a coup group), in 1992, Bhumibol helped Thailand shift to a democratic society. A general election was then held when Kraprayoon quickly resigned.

Relationship

Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, and HRH Princess Chulabhorn Walailak were the couple’s four offspring. Bhumibol married Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara on April 28, 1950, a lineal descendant of Thai diplomat Nakkhatra Mangala. Adulyadej was not only the King of Thailand; he was also an artist, writer, musician, photographer, and translator.

Death

Adulyadej underwent a microsurgical decompression in 2006 after receiving a 1995 diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis. He ended up in the hospital in 2007 owing to a blood shortage in his brain; during his three-week stay, he received treatment for heart issues as well.

Bhumibol was hospitalized in 2009 with pneumonia and the flu, and WikiLeaks disclosed in 2011 that he had Parkinson’s illness. Adulyadej received treatment in 2012 for diverticulitis as well as for a slight subdural hemorrhage in his brain.

The king of Thailand was diagnosed with a blood infection, lung inflammation, and kidney failure on October 1, 2016, according to the royal palace.

The next week, he was put on a ventilator, and on October 13, 2016, he passed away at the age of 88 in Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok. Bhumibol’s body was carried to the Grand Palace the following day for a bathing ritual, and at the end of the month, a five-day cremation ceremony was held.

His remains were interred at the Royal Cemeteries at Wat Ratchabophit, the Chakri Maha Phasat Throne Hall. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, the son of Adulyadej, succeeded him as monarch.
