Kerry joined the Naval Reserve in 1966, and between 1968 and 1969, he completed a brief four-month tour of duty as the officer-in-charge (OIC) of a Swift Boat in South Vietnam. He received three Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and other battle honors for his service.

After that, he became a member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, where he became a well-known national spokesperson and an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War.
