Early Life

Alexander Lukashenko was born in the Kopys settlement of what was then the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic on 31 August 1954. Her mother was Ekaterina who did various jobs, including on a railway, at a flax factory, and at a construction site and she raised him single-handedly.

Alexander was enrolled in Alexandria secondary school, and he later graduated from the Mogilev Pedagogical Institute. In 1985, he graduated from Belarusian Agricultural Academy.

Career

From 1975 to 1977, he served in the Soviet Border Troops. From 1980 to 1982, he was an instructor in the political department of military unit No. 2187 of the Western Frontier District in Brest and in the Soviet Army. From 1977 to 1978, he led All-Union Leninist Young Communist League in Mogilev.

Alexander was elected deputy to the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR in 1990. In April 1993, he was elected to serve as the interim chairman of the anti-corruption committee of the Belarusian parliament. He accused 70 senior government officials of corruption including stealing state funds for personal purposes in 1993.

On June and 10 July, a new Belarusian constitution enacted in early 1994 paved the way for the first democratic presidential election. Alexander was one of the six candidates who stood in the first round. “I am neither with the leftists nor the rightists. But with the people against those who rob and deceive them” was what he declared in The New York Times interview.

Lukashenko won with a vote of 45.1%. On 10 July, he won the second round with a vote of 80.1%. Ten days after the election, the presidential inauguration was held at the Government House on 20 July 1994, during a special meeting of the parliament, the Supreme Council.

Lukashenko announced his intention to hold a referendum in February 1995. Deputies of the 199-member Belarusian parliament signed a petition to impeach Lukashenko on charges of violating the Constitution in the summer of 1996.  it was announced that 70.5% of voters, of an 84% turnout, had approved the amended constitution on 25 November.

In 2005, after Lukashenko confirmed he was running for re-election opposition groups began to seek a single candidate. On the Day of Solidarity with Belarus, on 16 October 2005, the political group Zubr and Third Way Belarus encouraged all opposition parties to rally behind one candidate to oppose Lukashenko in the 2006 election.

Exit polls showed Lukashenko winning a third term in a landslide, amid opposition reports of vote-rigging and fear of violence on 19 March 2006. On 19 December 2010, Lukashenko was one of ten candidates registered for the presidential election held in Belarus. The CEC said that Lukashenko won 79.65% of the vote (he gained 5,130,557 votes) with 90.65% of the electorate voting.

Russian security services claimed to have derailed an assassination attempt on Lukashenko in 2021, and two suspects were held up at his behest.

Alexander got married to his high school girlfriend Galina Zhelnerovich. Later that year, the couple had a son and named him Viktor. They had a second son named Dmitry in 1980. In 2004, Lukashenko had another son named Nikolai from an extramarital affair.
