She then took a ten-year-long hiatus, following the completion of her tertiary education and married life.

She has stated that this break almost cost her her acting career. When Omoni returned to the movie industry, she could no longer fit in and this led to her own film productions. The Figurine, released in 2009, was the first movie she featured in after the break. She then went on to get lead roles in other blockbuster movies like Anchor Baby, Being Mrs. Elliot, Fifty, Wives on Strike, and The Rivals, all of which are her credited screenplays.

The Rivals won her a prestigious award, the Best International Drama at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. Being the first Nollywood actress to achieve this feat, she also received two awards for her movie Anchor Baby, namely, the award for Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival and the award for Best Actress Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Movie Awards, both in 2010. She has won several other awards and nominations.

The 2017 movie, Okafor’s Law, was one of several movies directed by Omoni Oboli, in which she also acted. However, the movie caused a lot of controversies as it was alleged that the actress infringed on the copyright of Jude Idada who claimed to be a part scriptwriter of the film. This was resolved and the movie was released in March 2017, a later date than its original release date.
