Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly, on June 7, 1990, in Sydney, Iggy was raised in Mullumbimby, New South Wales, Australia. Her parents were Brendan and Tanya Kelly. Her father was a painter and comic artist of Irish and Australian descent. Her mother was a holiday house and hotel cleaner.

She began rapping at the age of fourteen. Citing the all-female band TLC rapper Left Eye as her earliest influence, she also created her own band with two girls from her neighborhood, but they later split as Iggy felt that the other two were not serious with the group’s activities.

She expressed interest in moving to America and left high school to join her mother in her cleaning work. Saving up enough money, she eventually moved in 2006. She left on the pretext of going on a short holiday but later ended up staying there and told her parents that she would not come back. She acquired her GED there.

She also obtained a visa waiver, which she renewed by going to Australia every three months. She resided in Florida for some time and then moved to Texas.
