Lauren enlisted in the US Army from 1962 to 1964 after quitting school. At Brooks Brothers, he later worked as a tie salesman and sales assistant. Men’s ties were therefore the first item in the Ralph Lauren brand’s inaugural line.

Ralph Lauren introduced his first complete menswear collection in 1968 under the brand name “Polo.” His line was solely distributed by Bloomingdale’s department store by 1969. He kept growing his product line, introducing a line of women’s fitted shirts in 1971 that featured the now-famous Polo player insignia, and his first comprehensive women’s collection in 1972.

He also opened his first shop in Beverly Hills, California, on Rodeo Drive, in 1971. In 1972, the company introduced its iconic cotton mesh Polo shirt in 17 various colors, complete with the Polo player logo on the chest.
