Brief History of IBM

IBM is one of the biggest universal technology firms which was established just a little after the 20th century by Charles Flint. It was initially named Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR) but in 1924, it became known as International Business Machines.

Between the 1960s and the 1970s, the prominent digital platform was the IBM mainframe represented by the System/360. The magnetic stripe card, the floppy disk, the UPC barcode, the relational database, the SQL programming language, the automated teller machine, the hard disk drive, and the dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) are some of the major IBM innovations.

The key foundation of IBM was inventions by four distinct personalities namely; the computing scale by Julius E. Pitrap in 1885, the dial recorder by Alexander Dey in 1888, the Electric Tabulating Machine by Herman Hollerith between 1860 – 1929, and a time clock that tracked the arrival and departure of a worker on a paper tape by Willard Bundy in 1889.

The four companies run by these inventors were merged on June 11, 1911, to form a fifth. Charles Flint named the conglomerate Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR) and it was based in New York State. It had 1,300 employees at the time.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average listed IBM as one of 30 companies on its stock exchanges list, in 1979. IBM is also one of the global biggest employers, with more than 282,100 workers as of the time of this writing.

Thomas Watson served as IBM’s first CEO from 1914 to 1956. Presently, Arvind Krishna is the CEO and Chairman.
