Jerry attended East Bank High School from 1952 to 1956, when he participated in basketball under Duke Shaver’s direction. He quickly rose to the position of starting small forward and team captain for the freshmen.

Jerry received All-State recognition from 1953 to 1956, and All-American recognition in the final year. West guided his school to a state championship in 1956.

He attracted the attention of almost 60 colleges, but in the end, he chose to attend West Virginia University rather than move away from his home state. He was a member of a team that had a perfect 17 wins and 0 losses record during his freshman season.

Jerry equaled the 160 points scored in five games of the NCAA tournament during his junior season, earning him the title of Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

Starting with the Lakers

Further Career in NBA

Jerry West set an NBA record for points scored per game (46.3) in the 1965 playoffs. Even yet, the Celtics won the championship game by downing the Lakers once more.
