Prior to joining the state government of Governor James Ibori in 1999, Okowa first gained notoriety in local politics.
Ifeanyi Okowa unsuccessfully ran for governor in the primary in 2006 after leaving the government, but he later rejoined it under his old rival, Emmanuel Uduaghan.
When national politics became his focus in 2011, Okowa ran successfully for Delta North senator.
He served in the Senate for four years before returning to Delta and winning a resounding victory in the 2015 election for governor, becoming the first member of the ethnic Ika group or resident of the state’s north.
By a comparable margin in 2019, Okowa was later re-elected.
Honor and recognition
At Lagos’ Eko Hotel & Suites, he received the Independent Newspaper’s Man of the Year 2017 award. Alhaji Ismailis Isa Funtu gave the prize.
His successful lecture, “Good Governance for Wealth Creation and Sustainable Development: Experience and Lessons,” was presented at the 2017 edition of the University of Ibadan Alumni Lecture, which was sponsored by the University of Ibadan Alumni Association.
