Son dropped out of his High School Football Club in August 2008 at 16 to join Hamburger SV Academy for youth, he returned to South Korea a year later to participate in the FIFA U-17 World Cup. In November 2009, he was officially signed into the Hamburger SV Youth Academy.

In the 2010-2011 pre-season matches, he made quite an impression, he scored 9 goals and on the day he turned 18, he signed his first professional contract.
